Jazz group looks at Big Band Era

Saturday, November 6, 2010

GREENCASTLE -- Step out and back in time when the DePauw University Jazz Ensemble performs a program of favorites from the Big Band Era on Nov. 11.

The ensemble's final concert of the Fall 2010 semester will begin at 7:30 p.m. in DePauw's Kresge Auditorium, which is located in the Judson and Joyce Green Center of the Performing Arts. Admission is free.

Directed by Shawn Salmon, part-time assistant professor of music, the Jazz Ensemble will be performing a selection of jazz classics from such legends as Duke Ellington, Stan Kenton (who performed at DePauw in 1959), and Count Basie. DePauw's 16-piece big band will be joined by two vocalists during the program to sing hits from the Frank Sinatra and Lena Horne songbooks.

After the concert, all are welcome to join the ensemble, members of the DePauw jazz faculty and student jazz combos for a jam session at The Fluttering Duck, located within The Inn at DePauw, where the music will continue from 9 p.m. to midnight.
