Brazil Concert Band will perform Nov. 21

The Brazil Concert Band, under the direction of Matthew S. Huber, will present its annual Fall Music Festival at the Scottish Rite Cathedral on the corner of 8th and Ohio streets in Terre Haute on Nov. 21.

The performance, courtesy of the Scottish Rite and BCB, begins promptly at 3 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

The cathedral was originally the Hippodrome Theater, and Sousa and his band once performed on its stage.

The Brazil Concert Band has played at the Scottish Rite for more than 25 years, and both its compact discs of composer Fred Jewell's music were recorded at there. The CDs will be available for purchase before and after the concert.

The Brazil Concert Band earned the Sudler Silver Scroll Historic Band Award for its excellence and more than 150 years of continuous operation from the John Philip Sousa Foundation in 2006.

The BCB dates back to 1858 and played for the Lincoln-Douglas debates the same year.

During the Civil War the musicians enlisted together, serving as bandmen, medics and infantrymen. All survived.

The BCB performs every Sunday evening during June, July and August at the Forest Park Band Shell to thousands of band fans.

Its wide repertoire ranges from brand new compositions, Broadway and movie favorites, American folk tunes and it proudly presents works by Karl L. King, Fred Jewell, Henry Fillmore and of course Sousa.

In addition to the 13 Sunday concerts, the BCB plays at DePauw University in Greencastle, the Scottish Rite and travels every other year around the United States.

This past summer included performances at Graceland, the home of Elvis Presley, and the W.C. Handy Park on Beale Street all in Memphis.

The BCB has presented concerts in Washington D.C., Disney World, New Orleans, New York City and Wisconsin Dells during the last 12 years.

The Scottish Rite concert will included the Saxophone Octet playing "Brook's Chicago Marine Band March" which came directly from Sousa's band.

The playlist for the entire band will include "Hollywood Milestones" by Higgins, "Songs of Old Kentucky" by Karrick, "Emperata Overture" by Smith, "The Blue and Gray" by Grundman, "Mancini Magic" by Brubaker, "All Shook Up" by Ricketts, "America, the Beautiful" by Dragon, "Lassus Trombone" by Fillmore and "El Capitan" and "The Stars and Stripes Forever," both by Sousa.
