Goat, sheep producers have Town Hall meeting

Monday, November 8, 2010

The Purdue Extension cordially invites other sheep and goat producers to a town hall meeting to identify ways to help Indiana's small ruminant producer's market and their products.

This town hall style meeting is a great opportunity to represent small farms of Putnam County. You can have your voice heard and give input on a very important topic that has everything to do with making your business a success. Goat and sheep are a quickly growing part of animal agriculture, and it will take proactive producers to take advantage of this market.

There has been a great deal of informal discussion among sheep and goat farmers across the state about deficiencies in their marketing options. The Indiana Sheep and Goat Association, in cooperation with Purdue Cooperative Extension Services, have received a United States Dairy Association grant to investigate what can be done to improve marketing opportunities for small ruminant producers.

It is up to us to as livestock producers to indicate the challenges we face and provide suggestions regarding cooperative marketing, interest in graded sales, tele-auctions or other ideas. No idea is too small. The more producers involved, the stronger a marketing program we can develop. This meeting is free to everyone.

All you have to do is bring your ideas and be willing to listen to other people's ideas. This is your chance to have your ideas and concerns about marketing known by others. There are several of these types of meetings going on around the state. Putnam County will be hosting its meeting on Nov. 17 at the Greencastle Court House Annex.

Collaboration and input is appreciated. If you are unable to this meeting we would still appreciate your ideas, suggestions and information. Please e-mail Sheepgoatsgreat@yahoo.com or call at 891-0716.
