Wednesday, January 5, 2011

GREENCASTLE -- Kristen Fry and Kyle Alcorn were recently announced as the winners of the District Farm Bureau, Inc. Foundation Scholarship. Fry and Alcorn are both students at Purdue University.

Fry is the daughter of Phil and Janice Fry of Roachdale. Alcorn is the son of Ron and Jane Alcorn of Greencastle. Local winners received $300 and the district winners receive $500. This makes five consecutive years that a Putnam County student has won one of the Indiana Farm Bureau District Scholarships.

These scholarships include the Foundation Scholarship, Marion Stackhouse Scholarship and Career Enrichment Scholarships. Beginning in 2011, the Indiana Farm Bureau Scholarships will be due March 1 rather than the past fall deadline.

The Foundation Scholarship is due March 1 to the Farm Bureau Women's Leader Beth Evans or submitted to the local Putnam County Farm Bureau office. One $500 scholarship will be awarded in each district. Eligible applicants must be over 17 years of age and from a family who has been a member of Indiana Farm Bureau for a period of two or more years prior to application.

Additionally, the person must be a high school graduate, admitted to an approved or accredited school of higher learning and planning to study a minimum of one year as a full-time student in an agriculture-related major.

Career Enrichment Scholarship application deadline is also March 1. Applications need to be returned to the Evans or submitted to the local Putnam County Farm Bureau office. This application is awarded to adults, 21 years or older. The scholarship may be used for a workshop, seminar, credit or non-credit class or degree program. The maximum award is $500, not to exceed cost of the class.

The Marion Stackhouse Scholarship is also due March 1. Applications must arrive to the Indiana Farm Bureau home office by the deadline. This scholarship may be used for a workshop, seminar, credit or noncredit class or degree program in an agricultural area. One applicant may be awarded the full $1,000 scholarship, or it may be divided among several applications. Any Indiana Farm Bureau family member is eligible.

Harry L. Pearson Outstanding Leader Scholarship applications are due Feb. 15. Incoming Purdue University freshmen and College of Agriculture students are eligible. Funded by Indiana Farm Bureau, Inc., this scholarship is given in honor of IFB past president Harry L. Pearson, who has a great love for agriculture education, Purdue University and Farm Bureau.

Applications for all the scholarships as well as information about additional scholarships are available on the Indiana Farm Bureau website, www.infarmbureau.org, under the "members only section" and then select the following menu choices, programs/women's programs/scholarships or from the local Farm Bureau office, or County Women's Leader Beth Evans 720-0011.
