Eels too slippery for South Putnam

Friday, January 7, 2011

GREENCASTLE -- South Putnam snapped out of its offensive slumber in the second half, but it didn't prevent a 65-47 loss to Eminence in a girls' basketball game on the Eagles' court.

South Putnam scored 29 points in second half and its total of 47 was a season high. The Eagles scored more than 30 points for the first time in five games.

"We had a good effort from everybody," Eagles' coach Debbie Steffy said.

It was the 11th straight defeat for South Putnam (1-13), which shot 23.2 percent (17-of-73) from the field including 0-of-2 on 3-pointers.

"I think we played pretty well, but we couldn't buy a basket and we put them at the free throw line too much," Steffy said.

Eminence (6-7) shot 38 free throws and made 26 (68.4 percent). The Eagles were 13-of-16 (81.2 percent) at the foul line. The Eels made 41.3 percent (19-of-46) of their field goals.

South Putnam couldn't handle the Eels' Kateland Hunter inside. The strong 5-foot-10 junior had 26 points on 8-of-11 field goals and 10-of-14 free throws. She also had a game-high 12 rebounds. Hunter had 19 points and nine rebounds in the first half, which ended with the Eels on top, 35-18.

Ericka Minor led the Eagles with 15 points and Alex McHugh had 10 points and nine rebounds.

South Putnam's next game is at county rival Greencastle next Friday.
