Greencastle girls get edged out by Cascade at DePauw
GREENCASTLE -- DePauw's natatorium welcomed the girls teams from the West Central Conference. It was a close meet all the way through, specifically between Greencastle and Cascade. The end result: Cascade won by two points, 380 to 378. South Putnam came in third and North Putnam came in fourth with the scores of 223 and 32, respectively. Greencastle and Cascade came away with all firsts, although all schools had multiple personal bests and great performances overall.
Coach Luke Beasley of the Lady Tiger Sharks said, "When you are at your best and it is still not good enough there is nothing you can do. You have two good teams battling and swimming really well. They just had a few more horses than we did.
I give (Cascade) a lot of credit along with Coach Williams. Their head was just in it, they came here with a goal and they stepped up and accomplished it. Our girls did everything they could. They swam really well, but a two point meet is a switch either way. We knew it was going to come down to the last event."
The firsts for Greencastle started right away in the medley relay consisting of Sydney Cassida, Emily Wheeler, Melanie Bittles and Sydney Terry. The second half of the meet was more successful for the Tiger Sharks. Senior Melanie Bittles won over Justine Weatherman of Cascade with a time of 1:08.55 in the butterfly. Cassida, a freshmen for the Lady Tiger Sharks won the 500 freestyle by 18 seconds. Senior Terry won the backstroke with a time of 1:09.26. This was a victory over the second place contestant from Cascade by more than three seconds. The final win for the Lady Tiger Sharks came in the last relay consisting of Cassida, Rachael Custis, Sarah Beams and Alison Howard with a time of 4:10.40.
"Our senior girls, Melanie Bittles and Sydney Terry, have given so much to the Greencastle program. (We would have loved) to pull out a victory for them in their senior year, but they have nothing to be ashamed of and no one on this team has anything to be ashamed of. I thought our freshmen girls stepped up with the pressure of a conference meet. They didn't seem intimidated at all. It was a great day for Greencastle swimming on the girls side. We are extremely proud of them," stated Coach Beasley.
North Putnam Coach Wesley Richardson said, "I thought we did excellent today. Almost every freshmen bettered their times as to what they had done in the past. Some have even dropped five or six seconds off of their times. So I am pretty pleased with that."
South Putnam Coach Emily Karas thought the Lady Eagles swam well.
"Katherine Spencer and Ashley Wilson both performed well in the 500. They dropped a bunch of time."
All three county coaches agreed, as pleased as they were with all of the performances from their teams, they all need to focus on what to work on for improvements looking forward to sectionals.
The top finisher for North Putnam was Michelle Harper who came in fourth in the individual medley. Top finishers for South Putnam were Kate Sherwood (third) in the butterfly, Morgan Dezsi (fourth) in the 500 freestyle, Sarah New (fourth) in the backstroke, and Jessica York (third) in the breaststroke.
