Tiger Sharks shatter records at conference

Monday, January 10, 2011
Greencastle seniors Jesse Elkins and Jay Guffey have a look at their times after sweeping the top two positions in the 100 free. Guffey set new WCC records in both the 50 and 100 freestyle.

GREENCASTLE -- Saturday was the WCC Conference swim meet held at the DePauw natatorium. The Greencastle Tiger Sharks dominated the swim meet, winning all but one event including diving. Greencastle won with the score of 396 points. South Putnam came in second with a score of 251. Cascade followed with a score of 225, and North Putnam scored 207 points.

Greencastle Coach Luke Beasley "thought the boys were lights out! We came here with the goal of six meet records. I circled them and talked about them before the meet. We talked about it during the week."

The Tiger Sharks broke five of the six records they set out looking to break. The boys ended up breaking the medley, the 50 free, 100 butterfly, 100 freestlyle, and the 100 breaststroke. Of the four individual records broken, two were taken down by the same swimmer: Jay Guffey. Guffey won the 50 freestyle as well as the 100 freestyle.

The butterfly was won by freshmen Nash Firebaugh, and the breaststroke was broken by senior Walter Chiarella. The record breaking medley was made up of Jesse Elkins, Walter Chiarella, Nash Firebaugh and Jay Guffey.

Coach Beasley noted, "I thought our seniors Walter Chiarella, Joey Kass, Jay Guffey, Jesse Elkins and Cody Watson, I just thought those guys were just awesome today. They came here and swam with a purpose all day long. They knew what they wanted to accomplish and they did it."

It was not just the seniors that performed well at the meet.

Sophmore Matt Simms won the diving with a score of 189.05 over Sam Gould of South Putnam who scored 182.15.

"Freshmen Nash Firebaugh, Nathan Gardner, Isaac Harms all went out and swam personal bests today. They are making great progress."

The one event that the Tiger Sharks gave up was to North Putnam senior Jeremy Ban. Jeremy won the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:07.31.

County swimmers at the conference had a successful day. There were several events that the boys were in the top three finishers of the races. Greencastle may have broken meet records, but several county swimmers had record breaking days themselves. All coaches talked about personal bests being met.

South Putnam Coach Emily Karas noted, "our distance boys had their personal bests today. Larry Hurst and Zeke Evens in the 500 and Taylor Arnold had his personal best in the 100 backstroke."

Personal bests for Greencastle included "Joey Kass in his 200 and 500 free, Alex Asbell (in the) 500 free. (That) was an awesome swim for him. It was an 18 second season best for Asbell on that 500 free. I am extremely proud. He has worked really hard and deserves it," said coach Beasley.

Coaches Richardson, Karas and Beasley are all looking forward to the sectional and what needs to be done in preparation.

Coach Richardson of North Putnam noted, there were several personal bests met today, but "some things we need to work on for sectionals but we will be (working really hard) the next few weeks (in preparation) for that."

"I think we need to work on finishing and making sure our last lap is just as hard as our first one. Making sure the fine (tuning) is taken care of: starts, turns, (finishes, and exchanges) are on point and solid," stated South Putnam Coach Karas.

"I think the guys have stayed extremely focused all year long and understand our goal is to go win a sectional championship, get place relays to state and to score some points at state," Beasley said. "To do something Greencastle swimming really hasn't done before. I think their eyes are on the prize and they are up to the challenge. It is going to be a fun month coming up through February."
