Dan C. Rattray, 79, Greencastle, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 13, 2011, at The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. Mr. Rattray was born on June 2, 1931 in San Jose, Calif., to Alexander L. and Eldona C. Rattray. As a youth in San Jose, he was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Boy Scouts of America, only missing the Eagle Scout Award by a whisker because he never learned to swim.

He began his career at IBM, working in the Supplies Division in the company's first West Coast manufacturing facility: a card plant located in the former Temple Laundry building in San Jose. Mr. Rattray worked for the company for the next 35 years, primarily in punched card manufacturing, in Campbell, Calif.; Vestal, New York; Sherman, Texas; Greencastle; and Princeton, N.J. Upon retirement in Greencastle, he devoted his energies to an antiques business and collection.
Mr. Rattray is survived by his children: Debbie McHardy of Santa Maria, Calif; Patricia Rattray of Boise, Idaho; Susan and John Scott of Indianapolis; Ellen Kelso of Cincinnati; and Dan and Deanna Rattray Jr. of China Grove, N.C.; his brother and sister-in-law Alex and Ann Rattray of West Linn, Ore.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Calling will be at Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home on Thursday from 4-7 p.m. A graveside service will be conducted Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Forest Hill Cemetery in Greencastle.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be sent to the Putnam County Community Foundation (2 South Jackson Street, Greencastle, IN, 46135) for the benefit of the Greencastle High School Alumni Scholarship Fund or for the benefit of the Putnam County Museum.
