Cougars continue to struggle

Wednesday, January 26, 2011

ROACHDALE -- DePauw University women's basketball coach Kris Huffman was in the stands Tuesday to watch Turkey Run defeat North Putnam, 61-17, in a nonconference girls game on the Cougars' court.

Huffman is recruiting Warriors' center Adrianne Francis, who also is considering Hanover and hasn't made a final decision according to Turkey Run coach Jeff Thompson. Huffman undoubtedly liked what she saw in Francis, a 6-foot senior with quickness who scored 19 points and had 13 rebounds and five steals against the Cougars.

Turkey Run, the No. 2-ranked 1A team in the state, isn't a one-woman show. The Warriors (18-2) start five seniors with well-developed all-around skills. They committed only four turnovers, shot 51 percent (25-of-49) from the field and committed only 10 fouls. Chelsea Newnum added 12 points and Chelsea Francis scored 11.

North Putnam (3-15) was led by sophomore center Samantha Lucas with seven points and senior forward Megan Robinson scored six.

The Cougars shot 19.4 percent (7-of-36) from the field.

"We were outmanned at most positions," North Putnam coach Jim Brothers said. "They're a well coached and well disciplined team and they shoot the ball well. There's a reason why they're ranked second in the state and have lost only two games. They're legitimate.

"We were three-of-16 shooting inside 10 feet in the first half. I thought we did a pretty good job getting shots, but we didn't make them. I thought we competed well and I thought we played pretty well in our man-to-man defense in the second half."
