County back to level two emergency

Wednesday, February 2, 2011

GREENCASTLE -- Putnam County has returned to a level 2 travel emergency.

Level 2 means conditions threaten public safety. Only essential traffic is recommended, such as to and from work and for emergency situations. Businesses, schools, government agencies and other organizations should implement their emergency action plans to determine if travel is required.

With crews continuing to work on power restoration and city streets driveable, the county commissioners plan to reopen the Putnam County Courthouse and Courthouse Annex on Thursday.

Greencastle City Hall will also reopen Thursday.

Hyten said one of the major problems still facing the county is in clearing roads. Although crews have been applying salt to major county roads, the temperature will need to rise before it really begins to melt.

For two days, we've been snowed in. The temperature is dropping and the north wind is increasing. My wife has done nothing but look through the kitchen window.

If it gets much worse, I may have to let her in.

My husband is an state trooper and we were most definitely at a Level 1, the paper reported accurately.

To UMAD: We were definitely a Level 1. We get reverse 911 calls--and got one notifying of Level 1 emergency status.

Also, the INDOT online map designated Putnam County a Level 1.
