Program offered through Senior Center

Saturday, February 26, 2011

GREENCASTLE -- Beginning March 1, the Putnam County Senior Center will offer a new program to the residents of Putnam County.

The Putnam County Resource Center will feature information about and coordination of services to those in need of assistance in three important areas of healthcare -- long term care, home healthcare and hospice.

Area providers offering these services that elect to participate with the senior center will be represented by trained volunteers on site at the center. These volunteers will assist interested individuals and their families in learning of the resources available to them.

In addition to this volunteer-provided assistance, the new Resource Center, in partnership with Visiting Nurse Service Inc., will offer Putnam County residents a Wellness Center.

This facility will allow visitors to check their blood pressures, heart rates, oxygen saturation levels and weights on a weekly basis. This information will be monitored, and guidance will be provided to visitors by a VNS nurse.

The center will also provide educational materials related to chronic disease management.

Services at the center will be offered free of charge. Four local nursing homes -- Asbury Towers, Autumn Glen, Summerfield Health and Millpond Health Campus will also be sponsors for the program.

Future plans for the Resource Center include information and coordination of many other services and programs related to assistance for the elderly, disabled, veterans and others in the county.

For more information, call the Putnam County Senior Center at 653-8606 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
