Robert A. "Bob" York Sr., 70, Greencastle, passed away on Friday, March 11, 2011.

He was born June 18, 1940 in Greencastle to Raymond Nile York and Mildred O'Neal York.

Bob was a 1958 graduate of Greencastle High School and was the founder and Chairman of the York Automotive Group.

He started selling cars in 1973 and in 1987 opened York Pontiac Oldsmobile GMC Truck in Greencastle. The York Automotive Group was established in 2000 with the addition of the Chrysler Dodge and Jeep franchises in Crawfordsville. In 2005 the York Automotive Group added Chevrolet Buick and Pontiac franchises in Brazil. In 2006 Chevrolet was added to the Greencastle dealership.

Bob's motto, "We're not #1, you are!" led the York Automotive Group to become eligible to become a 5 Star Chrysler Dealer. This award not only recognizes sales volume, but most importantly customer service and satisfaction.

Bob was a former Putnam County Democratic Party chairman, former Greencastle Chamber of Commerce board member, a member and former board of directors member of Windy Hill Country Club and a former member of the Old National Bank board of directors.

He was a member of the L.O.O.M. no. 1592, American Legion Post no. 58, Eagles Aerie no. 4388, and Temple Masonic Lodge in Greencastle.

Surviving are his sons, Robert A. "Rob" York Jr. and wife Tammy of Greencastle and Nick York and wife Kaye of Mooresville; three brothers, Dick York and companion Debbie of Florida, Gerald York and wife Diane of Kentucky and Steve York of Pennsylvania; and five beloved grandchildren, Robert A. York III, Brady M. York, Colin S. York, Kara N. York and Meilani A. York.

His parents preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Greencastle Christian Church, 620 Primrose Lane, with Pastor Mark Miller and Pastor Joel Everson officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Greencastle Christian Church.

In Bob's honor, memorials are preferred to the Putnam County Community Foundation or the Greencastle High School Alumni Association.

Bob enjoyed golfing and boating, most of all his grandchildren.
