Handgun apps to be filed online

Monday, March 21, 2011

The Putnam County Sheriff's Department recently received updated information from the Indiana State Police regarding the application process for an Indiana handgun license. All residents may apply online, and the state is requesting that local law enforcement agencies do only minimal paper applications.

With the online program widely available, the state wishes to minimize the number of paper applications, even requesting applicants without Internet access be directed to libraries and community centers providing free access.

The online application can be accessed at www.in.gov/isp under the "Firearms Licensing" tab. After completing this form, an additional option is available for those who wish to have fingerprints submitted electronically. This final step will speed up the return of a permit to less than one week, compared to 12 weeks.

All applicants must still go to the local agency of residence to pay the local fee, submit to a background check and have the application transmitted.

The Putnam County Sheriff's Department is available to complete the application process Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Citizens of incorporated areas may contact the local law enforcement agencies of their residence to verify times available and if they are able to transmit applications electronically.
