NP's Megan Robinson earns Lilly Scholarship

Friday, April 1, 2011

A North Putnam High School senior has been named the recipient of a four-year, full-tuition scholarship as the Putnam County Community Foundation 2011 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar.

Megan B. Robinson, daughter of Roland and Melissa Robinson, Roachdale, will receive full tuition to the Indiana college of her choice and an $800 yearly stipend for required books and equipment.

Robinson plans to attend Hanover College and study post-secondary education in mathematics and minor in psychology. She also aspires to play volleyball for the Hanover varsity squad.

During her North Putnam career, Robinson participated in student council, S.A.D.D., Key Club and National Honor Society, and she was the founder of Peers Educating Peers. Her athletic activities included cross country and track, and she was a captain of the basketball and volleyball teams.

Robinson has numerous volunteer experiences, including Ronald McDonald House, Hope Haven, Mill Creek Nursing Home and Special Olympics. A 10-year member of Putnam County 4-H, she was a Hoosier Girls State delegate and gubernatorial candidate during her junior year.

Upon learning of her LECS award, Robinson called it "a dream come true."

Her parents expressed their gratefulness and appreciation to the Putnam County Community Foundation, as well as to the educators at North Putnam for "providing Megan a wonderful education over the last 13 years."

Robinson was chosen following a review process by the Lilly Selection Committee from the Putnam County Community Foundation. There were approximately 50 applicants. The committee is made up of two voting members from each area school corporation. The process included a blind review for the first three phases and concluded with an individual interview with each finalist.

Students are evaluated based on scholastic abilities and intellectual pursuits, capacity to lead and motivate fellow students, social commitment and extracurricular involvement, and the ability to articulate career plans that demonstrate motivation and initiative. Following the personal interview, the committee submitted its nominee to Independent Colleges of Indiana Inc. (ICI) for the selection of the recipient.

ICI is a non-profit corporation that represents 31 regionally accredited degree granting, nonprofit, private colleges and universities in the state. During the first 13 years of the LECS program 3,345 students in Indiana high schools have received Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships.

The Putnam County Community Foundation is a nonprofit public charity established in 1985 to administer endowments, award grants, and provide leadership, enriching the quality of life and strengthening community in Putnam County. The Community Foundation administers nearly 220 funds and endowments for donors, supporting a variety of charitable purposes.
