After Beverly East and Anita Tuttle were helped from their vehicle, the two women were sent to Methodist Hospital in Greencastle.

CLOVERDALE -- A car accident near the 35-mile marker on I-70 Monday morning halted traffic from both directions for an hour and led to two very serious injuries.

Beverly East, 58, and Anita Tuttle, 59, both of Illinois, were going westbound on the highway when East, the driver, fell asleep at the wheel. The car, a 2000 Buick LeSabre, drifted into the median where it stuck a culvert. The car rolled over several times before landing in the nearby ditch.

Indiana State Police arrived on the scene at 6:12 a.m., where both passengers were trapped in the car, said Sergeant Jon Chadd. Police turned the car over and helped the two women out of the wreck. Both women were taken to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, and are currently still being treated there after sustaining serious injuries.

  • The police did not "turned the car over and helped the two women out of the wreck." Cloverdale Fire Department removed the roof of the car and assisted Operation Life in the removal of the patients from the car while it remained on it's side as shown in the picture.

  • And it was 6 p.m., not a.m.

  • I have been trying to find information on an accident that occured on Westbound I-70 at about 6 PM on Monday 4/11/11 as a friend of mine was the first on the scene. She is an RN, and provided medical assistance to the crash victims, both elderly women.

I believe the accident reported in this article is the accident, however it seems there are numerous inaccuracies in the article, including the mention of a morning accident, and the caption saying the vicitms went to Methodist Greencastle vs Methodist Indianapolis in the body text. And, it is my understanding Fire Rescue did use the "Jaws of Life" to extract the victims from the car, and they were both flown by lifeline helicopter to indianapolis. EMS took over care for the victims, one of which was VERY CRITICALLY wounded, and neither were able to move, and a turning over of the car would have been impossible. The picture clearly shows the car is still on its side, and the roof of the car was "cut off".

More importantly, if anyone knows whether both victims survived, please share that with me at graikes1@gmail.com as I would like to pass that on to my friend so she can have closure on the their status.

    Thank you,

    glr
