With plans to head for Rose Hulman to study chemical engineering next year, Cassie Warren had a chance to explore her future with a recent writing assignment on plastics.

As it turned out, she was exploring the future of the planet and contributing to her own future at the same time.

Warren's plastics essay recently won the Central Indiana Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) essay contest. In her essay, she discussed the amount of plastic waste modern society produces as well as ways to recycle those used products.

Since she's planning to study chemical engineering, this was just an early taste of something in which she might specialize.

"It was kind of down my alley," Warren said.

She said at college, a cooperative opportunity could be to work in plastics.

"I want to try that and see if I like it to see if that's something I want to do for the rest of my life," Warren said.

Dan Stratton of GVS Filter Technology and Ray Amos of Boston Scientific, both representing SPE, presented Warren with her award Friday at South Putnam, in front of her animal science and natural resources classmates.

Through the award, both Warren and teacher Dave Davies received a monetary award for further educational pursuits.

Davies said it was easy to pick Warren's essay for submission to the contest.

"All around, it was the most professional essay," Davies said. "It was well-researched. She's a very talented writer."

Stratton and Amos said the central Indiana chapter received about 70 entries this year, with Warren's rising to the top.

Warren is now in competition for the international SPE essay award.
