Paul Curtis "Lurch" Targett

Monday, April 25, 2011

Paul Curtis "Lurch" Targett, Staunton, began a new journey at age 75 on Friday, April 22, 2011. Paul succumbed to complications related to a lengthy battle of pneumonia with wife of 48 years, Barbara, and family by his side.

Paul spent most of his life working to provide for his family, designing, building and redesigning, only to retire and do it for himself, reengineering products that he felt could've been made better. He could often be seen riding around Staunton on his tricycle talking to anyone who would listen. He was a man with a thousand stories that brought a million smiles, especially a smile to his buddy Jack, an abandoned dog he rescued. Along with the ever present shadow of four other dogs Baby, Maggie, Ginger and Moosee who followed his every move.

Paul wasn't just a storyteller, or a hard working creative thinking animal lover, but a loving husband and father full of knowledge that will be missed by everyone who knew him.

Paul served his country in the U.S. Army and was a member of VFW No. 972 in Terre Haute. In the past, he had worked at Twiggs, Macalco and Wilson-Tech. For the past 14 years he had worked for Happico/Chiyoda as a tool and die maker. He was a charter member of the Wabash Valley Genealogy Society in Terre Haute and had been a past member of the Posey Township Volunteer Fire Department. He and Barbara were members of the Staunton Christian Church.

Survivors include his loving wife Barbara Lewis Targett; three children, Sherri Bales and husband Larry of Libertyville, Allen Targett and wife Emily of Burnett and David Targett of Staunton; grandchildren Danielle Arwood (Brandon), Mary Targett, Megan Targett, Tiffany Targett, Lauren Targett; three great-grandchildren, Cayden Arwood, Sophia Arwood and Jordan Targett; one sister, Sarah Marie Wheat of Brazil; special daughter Cathi Boone; and many nieces, nephews and extended family.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver Derrick Targett and Edith Mitscher Targett; siblings Warren Targett, Robert Targett, Walter Targett, James Targett, Florence Huff, Isabelle Targett and Helen Targett.

Services will be held at French Funeral Home at 1 p.m. Friday with Pastor Doug Parkey officiating. Burial will follow at Summit Lawn Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be provided by the U. S Army and VFW No. 972. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-8 p.m. and again Friday prior to services.
