City Police

The report of a possible burglary in progress produced some anxious moments Monday morning in Greencastle's South End.

City officers to responded to a residence near the intersection of Indiana and Berry streets shortly after 8 a.m. when neighbors thought they saw suspicious activity. Police originally thought there might be an intruder in the house, Det. Capt. Randy Seipel said.

While subjects were seen on the property, the homeowner did not want the matter pursued and police left the scene without further incident.

Two multiple-vehicle accidents were investigated by city officers recently.

At 11:50 a.m. Sunday, five vehicles were damaged in an accident on the Kroger parking lot off Indianapolis Road. Officer Darrel Bunten estimated total damage at $5,000-$10,000.

The mishap occurred as Rendyl Masten, 62, was attempting to back a 1994 Chrysler into a handicapped parking space when he apparently hit the accelerator instead of the brake, police said.

Masten's car backed over a handicapped parking sign and struck four parked vehicles -- a 2004 Pontiac Aztec, owned by Bess Coffey, Reelsville; a 2008 Ford, owned by George Chaplin III, Greencastle; a 2001 Chevrolet Malibu, owned by Sherry Miller, Greencastle; and a 2001 Ford Ranger, owned by James Church, Cape Coral, Fla.

At 8:01 a.m. Friday, a three-vehicle accident was reported on Percy Julian Drive, 200 feet south of Avenue F.

A Greencastle school employee had stopped traffic on Percy Julian Drive to allow students to cross near the Grace Tabernacle Church. Stopped in southbound traffic were a 2008 Hyundai, driven by Mike Johnson, 52, Greencastle, and a 2004 Mazda, driven by Channing Mangrum, 39, Greencastle.

Unable to stop was a 1999 Chevrolet Suburban, driven by Jason Ulrey, 37, Greencastle. Ulrey told Capt. Mike Hanlon he reached down to pick up his drink when his vehicle struck the Mangrum vehicle, which was pushed into the Johnson car.

Total damage was estimated at $2,500-$5,000.

Three minors are facing alcohol-related charges as a result of two separate traffic stops by city officers.

At 2:45 a.m. Saturday, a 17-year-old Greencastle female and a 16-year-old Cunot female were cited for illegal consumption of alcohol by minors after Capt. Charles Inman stopped their vehicle. The older juvenile had to be taken to Putnam County Hospital after seeming unresponsive due to the alcohol consumption, police said.

At 7:09 p.m. Friday, Danielle Tesmer, 19, Greencastle, was stopped on Bloomington Street by Officer Eric Vaughan for a possible traffic violation. She was given a warning for the traffic violation but faces a minor-in-consumption charge after registering .02 percent blood-alcohol on the PBT unit.

At 7:15 p.m. Friday, a Coatesville man was arrested and lodged in the Putnam County Jail after Officer Bunten stopped his vehicle at Calbert Way and the entrance to Walmart.

Russell A. Benson, 34, was charged as a habitual traffic offender.

One warrant arrest was reported April 21 when Capt. Inman arrested James T. Coy, 33, Greencastle, on a Hendricks County warrant. Coy was arrested in the 800 block of Robinwood Drive.
