So when Greencastle Middle School seventh grader Dylan Owens hit a hole-in-one Tuesday, he even surprised himself.
"It felt great," Owens said. "I didn't think it was going to happen ever."
But then on No. 2 at Forest Park Golf Course, in a road match with North Clay Middle School, Owens found the bottom of the cup on his tee shot. It's quite an accomplishment for a five-year veteran of the sport who hadn't previously even birdied a hole.
"I haven't even gotten a birdie yet," Owen said. "I'd rather have an eagle than a birdie any day."
Owens became the first golfer in the four-year history of the GMS program to ace a hole.
"We've had some good players," Coach Bob Hedge said. "It's pretty special when you do that."
The Tiger Cubs' No. 4 golfer has another year of middle school ahead of him, but said he is likely to continue playing the sport in high school.
