Cloverdale advances with 14-7 win

Cloverdale senior Breegen Andersen had three RBIs in the Clovers' win over Monrovia Monday.

LIZTON -- Cloverdale's softball team pounded out a 14-7 victory over Monrovia in the first round of Sectional 46 on Monday at Tri-West Hendricks in Lizton.

Kara Knapp, Bradanne Toney and Breegan Anderson had three RBIs and two hits each in the Clovers (14-10) highest scoring game of the season. Cloverdale had 13 hits.

"We hit, hit, hit," Cloverdale coach Kim Bailey said. "Everybody was hitting."

Cloverdale will play Cascade in the sectional semifinals today at 5 p.m.

Paige Gutierrez pitched a complete game for the Clovers. The junior right-hander allowed seven hits, struck our four, walked five and hit a batter in seven innings.

The Clovers scored five runs in the top of the first.

"We were excited about hitting first," Bailey said. "We wanted to put runs on the board, but I didn't expect five runs."

Lead-off hitter Samantha Smith was hit by a pitch. Brianna Hoff bunted and a Monrovia (13-10) throwing error put Clovers on second and third base. Kara Knapp's ground-ball fielder's choice drove in Smith and Goss drove in Hoff with a single to left field. Toney's fly ball to left drove in Knapp with the third run.

Amanda Patterson and Rebecca Raiser walked to load the bases and Andersen delivered a two-run single to right.

Cloverdale scored four runs in the fourth.

Smith tripled to left. Hoff reached on a fielder's choice and stole second. Gutierrez had an RBI on a sacrifice fly to right and Knapp had a run-producing single to center. Goss singled and Toney had a two-run double to right.

Gutierrez held the Bulldogs hitless until the fourth. Eryn Dillon had a two-run, inside-the-park home run and Jessica Thom drove in two runs with a long drive to left field. Miranda Vondersaar drove in the fifth run with a single to right, but Patterson threw out Sara Thom on a perfect throw to Toney at third base to end the inning with Cloverdale leading, 9-5..

The Clovers scored one run in the fifth on a walk to Raisor and an RBI triple to center by Andersen.

Patterson and Raisor each had RBI singles in the sixth to boost Cloverdale's lead to 12-5 and Knapp had an RBI single in a two-run seventh for a 14-5 lead.

Dillon, who has signed to play at IUPUI next season, doubled in the seventh and Gutierrez walked Colleen Hadley and Blake Whitaker to load the bases with none out. Gutierrez retired the next two hitters on ground outs, with each scoring a run, and got the final out on a fly ball.
