Different dialogue in 'The Music Man'

Friday, June 17, 2011

To the Editor:

Last Thursday night (June 9) I went with a group of ladies to the Putnam County Playhouse to see their production of "The Music Man." I was really looking forward to it for I have seen the movie several times but had never been to the PCPH.

I enjoyed the music but was concerned about different wording in the dialogue. I know the word "god" was not in the movie nor were other things that were mentioned.

As a Christian, I do not care for this kind of "updating" of the original dialogue and the taking of God's name in vain! The people in bigger cities may not care what words they use but this Hoosier does. The movie was for general audiences but I would rate the play as PG.

Otherwise the cast and band did a wonderful job memorizing those difficult lines and performing the music! The stage crew also did an excellent job of changing scenes and props. The seating was comfortable and the tickets are reasonably priced.

I would go back again if they have another play I want to see.
