New mission statement, grading scale for Area 30

Friday, July 15, 2011

The Area 30 Career Center Education Interlocal Board of Directors began their monthly meeting Thursday morning by revealing a new mission statement for the school.

Starting this fall, the cover of each student handbook will bear the words: "Explore opportunities. Experience excellence. Realize potential."

The new mission statement isn't the only new change to the student handbook. A new grading scale will be adopted this year at Area 30. The new scale more closely resembles those used by the county schools -- the "90, 80, 70, 60" scale.

The manual also includes slight alterations to the dress code doctrine with a slightly more lenient rule regarding nose piercing, which had become more commonplace last year. A concrete definition of bullying is now also offered within the pages.

There will also be changes to the staff handbook for Area 30. The main change involves the center's policy on social networking, which will be permitted only in special circumstances in which the sites are needed by certain courses as communication.

The board then addressed personnel changes, announcing the hiring of Karen Williams as kitchen manager and Regina Dean as a cafeteria employee. Both are replacement positions.

The next board meeting is scheduled for 9 a.m. Aug. 9 at Area 30.
