Parker picks up first career sprint car feature win at Lincoln Park
PUTNAMVILLE -- Final lap re-starts were pivotal at Lincoln Park Speedway on Saturday night as all four features came down to key strategy by front runners in each of the classes at the scenic Putnamville, Ind. oval.
In the sprint car division, Seth Parker dominated early and survived a late drive by Shane Hollingsworth on a re-start with two laps remaining. Hollings-worth made the pass, but was declared to have jumped the start, relegating him to third behind Brent Beauchamp.
In the UMP Modified class, Richie Lex stalked Kenny Carmichael Sr. and Craig Conyer throughout most of the feature before he raced to the bottom for a highlight pass on a re-start with one lap remaining. Lex took the checkers ahead of Carmichael, who dueled with Conyer side-by-side for most of the A-main.
The Bomber Bash didn't disappoint either as $500 was on the line for the winner as Josh Foxworthy went door-to-door against Scott Tidwell over the second half of the feature as Dustin Shoulders and David Bumgardner gave chase. Another re-start with just two laps remaining set up an impressive finish as Foxworthy found victory lane despite the dogged efforts of his challengers.
The final event of the evening saw Steve Peeden reclaim some of last season's magic with a win over Carmichael Sr. in a battle that went to the finish line. Another final lap caution set up a final dash for the cash as Peeden scored the win.
Forty-one sprint cars were on hand Saturday night and Parker showed that he would be a force early on as he won the second heat race after Logan Jarrett won the first of the evening. Brett Burdette, Kent Christian and Casey Shuman were also feature winners.
Jarrett and Parker started the A-main on the front row, but it was Parker that rocketed away from the rest of the field early on and continued to do so after several cautions over the first half of the feature. Jarrett tried to remain within striking distance as both drivers opened up a straightaway gap from the rest of the field. Behind the pair of young hot shoes, Burdette's night ended as he made contact with an infield tire after some racing contact amongst the secondary group that included Shane Hollingsworth, Thomas Meseraull, Shuman and Ethan Barrow.
Up front, Parker was flat footing the No. 38 sprinter above the cushion as Hollingsworth crept forward as Meseraull and Shuman each made contact on a re-start. Shuman slipped back a couple of spots. Parker remained up front, but the night would end in disappointment for Jarrett as he came to a stop over the banking off turn two.
On the late re-start, Parker got a good jump and stayed in front of Hollingsworth for a couple of laps before Meseraull hooked the cushion and got upside down, but was uninjured.
The final re-start of the night came with two laps to go and Hollingsworth was able to get alongside Parker and make a daring pass for the lead, but it was all for naught.
Parker remained in the top spot after the ruling that Hollingsworth jumped the start. Parker's win was his first sprint car feature victory as Beauchamp was second. Billy Puterbaugh Jr was fourth ahead of Christian and Ryan Pace.
In the UMP Modified main event, Carmichael Sr. led for much of the race after a door-to-door fight with Conyer as Paul Bumgardner gave chase in a three-for-all fight for the top spot. Behind them, Schuyler Nahre was battling with Larry Lambert early on as Lex crept forward from a 12th-place starting position.
Conyer and Carmichael traded runs off turn four before Conyer lost some ground as he got sideways off turn two. Carmichael held down the lead as Lex charged into second after Bumgardner pulled off the track.
As the final laps ticked off, Lex and Carmichael were duking it out for the lead when a caution with one lap remaining set up the final skirmish.
On the re-start, Lex got a good run and dove into the top spot as Carmichael gave chase over the final circuit, but Lex wasn't going to relinquish the point and took the victory. Conyer was third followed by Nahre and Brian Yeatman.
With $500 on the line for the bomber feature, there was sure to be plenty of competition and the A-main didn't disappoint, as Foxworthy's victory wasn't assured until the final trip around the oval.
Foxworthy and Tidwell battled up front for much of the feature as David Bumgardner, Lloyd Walls, Josh Fagg and Dustin Shoulders all in the mix as well.
A one-lap re-start was again the deciding factor as Foxworthy was able to make his lead stand up on the final lap as Tidwell, Bumgardner, Shoulders and Fagg crossed the finish line in the top-five.
The UMP Super Stock class was one that Peeden was fairly dominant in during the 2010 season at LPS as he picked up six feature victories during the final three months of racing.
On Saturday night he scored his first at Lincoln Park Speedway during the 2011 season, holding off Carmichael Sr. after another last lap caution set up a dash with Doug McCullough in third ahead of Smedley, Kenny Carmichael Jr. and Mike Staggs.
When the feature resumed green, Peeden was able to edge ahead off turn two and win by a car length over Carmichael Sr., Smedley, McCullough and Carmichael Jr. in the top-five.
Next weekend will feature the sprints, modifieds, super stocks and bombers at LPS.
