Saturday, August 20, 2011

A free spaghetti dinner and silent auction on Friday, Aug. 26 at New Life Baptist Church, Greencastle, will help raise funds for Courtney Burks' 11-month around-the-world mission trip.

Dinner is scheduled for 6 p.m. at New Life Baptist, 51 Ridgeway Rd., Greencastle, with the silent auction beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Burks, a South Putnam High School graduate who attends New Life, will be leaving on a mission trip in October. The 11-country, 11-month trip is organized by Adventures in Missions (AIM) through its program, The World Race.

Burks, who resides in Coatesville, will be working with a group to assist women and children who have been or are currently trapped in the sex trade by providing them a way out of that lifestyle.

The group will also be working with orphans, teaching English to adults and children, working in hospitals, helping AIDS victims and feeding the hungry in the poverty-stricken countries.

Burks hopes to raise $15,000 by October to be able to go on the unique mission trip to such countries as Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi and one unknown country.

Businesses that would like to contribute to the silent auction will be recognized at the auction/dinner and on her blog (courtneyburks.theworldrace.org

Donated items already have been received from companies such as Starbucks, Mike's Car Wash, McCalister's, Chick-fil-A, Tucker Schneider Realty, Christian Supply Center, Farm Bureau Insurance and Maurice's.

For more information, persons may contact Burks at 721-2821 or fav4jesus@gmail.com.
