Ivy Tech sets info sessions on training for healthcare industry jobs

Thursday, August 25, 2011

TERRE HAUTE -- In response to the current economy and high unemployment rates, Ivy Tech-Wabash Valley is hosting two information sessions on Tuesday, Aug. 30, beginning at 2 and 6 p.m. at Terre Haute.

The sessions are designed to provide the community with information on training the school offers in conjunction with Career Step, a leading online healthcare education company, for careers in the growing healthcare industry.

The current economy has reduced the number of jobs in many industries, resulting in some of the highest unemployment rates in decades. However, healthcare is one of the few bright spots as it is experiencing job growth despite the economy.

The U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that the healthcare industry will create 3.2 million new jobs before 2018, with the majority requiring less than four years of college education.

Within the healthcare industry, jobs in medical transcription and pharmacy technician are also increasing. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that the medical transcription field will experience 11 percent employment growth between 2008 and 2018 and that the pharmacy technician field will experience 31 percent employment growth during the same time period.

The programs offered at Ivy Tech -- Wabash Valley provide those within the community the opportunity to quickly gain the education they need to qualify for these jobs.

To educate the community on the in-demand occupations of medical transcription and pharmacy technician, Ivy Tech is holding the two information sessions on Tuesday in room W102 at the Center for Workforce Development in Terre Haute. These sessions will provide more information on the healthcare industry; medical transcription and pharmacy technician, and the training programs.
