Condo assault victim, 85, dies from injuries
An elderly Greencastle woman, the apparent victim of an assault at her Autumn Glen Village Condos residence earlier this week, died Thursday, the Marion County Coroner's Office confirmed.
The apparent homicide victim was identified as Essie McVey, 85.
Although the Greencastle Police Department later confirmed information regarding her death and the "suspicious crime" that reportedly occurred Tuesday morning at Autumn Glen Village Condos, family members have come forward to identify the victim of the assault and ask for help from the community.
Speaking individually to the Banner Graphic, Bryan Gorham and Troy McVey -- grandsons of Essie McVey -- said an unknown assailant entered her home in Greencastle and attacked her.
Essie McVey was taken Tuesday to Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis, and was taken off life support at noon Wednesday, her grandsons said.
Gorham said he would like any information about the investigation to be taken to the police as soon as possible.
Greencastle Police Chief Tom Sutherlin later confirmed the grandsons' statements, affirming that Essie McVey had passed and the crime occurred mid-morning. Sutherlin also noted that there were no signs of forced entry on the home, and the police department is following several leads.
More details about the specifics of the assault will be released at a later date. Anyone with information about the case may call 653-2925.
