Putnamville earns Training Facility of the Year Award at 2011 state conference

PUTNAMVILLLE -- The Indiana Department of Correction's (IDOC) Correctional Training Institute hosted the 2011 Statewide Trainers' Conference where the Putnamville Correctional Facility was recognized as the "Training Facility of the Year."

The opening address was delivered by Bruce Lemmon, commissioner of the IDOC. Commissioner Lemmon applauded the training staff for their diligence and professionalism, especially in "developing state of the art leadership training."

Richard L. Curry, executive director of Staff Development Emergency Operations, noted that the IDOC continues to face numerous challenges. Curry went on to add that "training must be realistic, reliable and effective" to meet those challenges.

Theme of the conference was "The Amazing Training Journey."

More than 60 trainers and support staff attended the Sept. 20-23 events, interactive teambuilding exercises and networking opportunities. Trainers explored contemporary and cutting-edge breakout sessions such as "Emotional Survival in Corrections," "Marketing Training," "Case Management" and "Core Team Dynamics."

Award-winning trainers included:

-- Judy Thomas, Correctional Industrial Facility, who received the Support Staff of the Year award for her continued support and numerous contributions to training.

-- David Dickinson, Edinburgh Correctional Facility, who was acknowledged and recognized with the Rising Star of the Year award.

-- Matt Andrick, Correctional Training Institute, who\ received Correctional Trainer of the Year.

-- Mike Minthorn, Miami Correctional Facility, who received Correctional Supervisor of the Year.

-- Chris Tanis, Parole District 8 South Bend, who was awarded Parole Trainer of the Year.
