"I didn't expect that," GHS head coach Garry Anderson said. "I bet I figured the score two or three dozen times and I've never gotten any closer than perhaps nine to 10 points to Plainfield. So that's what our race was. It took us a while to beat Tri-West, mentally as well as time-wise, but all season long we keep these stats on these runners throughout the state. I didn't expect this."
With seven runners posting time sub-20 minutes, Anderson said fans saw some very fast racing Tuesday.
"That's unheard of on this course. You just witnessed right now one of the fastest races for girls on this course that they've ever had here," he said.
Weatherford cut more than a minute off her time from last year's sectional, posting a time of 19:08.64 to lead Greencastle. Teammate Emily Gill placed in the top 15, finishing 14th in a time of 21:02.56. Kayla Cash was 23rd with a time of 21:43.98 and Sammy Haynes was 31st in a time of 22:21.18.
Paige Pickens placed 33rd on the night, running a time of 22:29.63, while Alex Stoffregen was 36th in a time of 22:57.82. Abigail Wilson was 39th for the Tiger Cubs in a time of 23:03.45.
Mallory Glaze paced the Eagles with a time of 21:54.78, good enough for 25th place. Madison Egold was 29th in a time of 22:15.50 and Jessica Jones was 40th in a time of 23:05.44. Angel Nield finished 44th with a time of 23:20.08.
A trio of Eagles rounded out South Putnam's runners. Ariel Higgins was 54th in a time of 24:08.92, with Michaela Scales placing 55th in a time of 24:09.55. Katelyn Lady finished her night in 57th place with a time of 24:13.82.
Cloverdale's Claudia Monnett led the team with a time of 22:04.93 for 27th overall. Laura Worthington was 70th in a time of 26:33.85 and Stephanie Spencer was 71st with a time of 26:43.56. Ashlee Nees was 74th in a time of 27:06.27 and Makalah Reed was 79th in a time of 31:30.16.
North Putnam had two runner post times at the sectional. Claire Dean was 77th overall with a time of 28:47.41 and Alex Land was 78th with a time of 29:54.87.
Anderson said his team's legs were tired following the race and expressed his hopes that the season-ending big meets would be moved around. Runner have to compete on the tough South Putnam course three times in seven days and Anderson said it simply wasn't enough time to get proper rest.
"These kids are running 5Ks and they can't rest up enough. I'd like to see our conference and our county move them back and give the kids a chance (to rest)," Anderson said.
Anderson commended his top two runners and said he's looking forward to the Ben Davis Regional.
"Colleen ran an outstanding race. Gill ran a great race and we've got some kids banged up. Their legs are getting tired. Regional is going to be fun. Hopefully we can get in a good race so we can get some kids in the semi-state. That's our goal. That was a hard race today," Anderson said.
The top five teams and top five individuals will continue on to the Ben Davis Regional Saturday.
