Tiger Cubs take third, Stevens places 6th

Wednesday, October 12, 2011
GHS senior Ryan Stevens placed sixth with a time of 17:01.97 at Tuesday's sectional at South Putnam.

The Greencastle boys' cross country team placed third at the South Putnam sectional Tuesday with 66 points and will advance to this weekend's Ben Davis Regional. Cloverdale placed eighth with 253 points, while South Putnam was ninth with 263 and North Putnam 10th with 292.

"We are thrilled with where we're at," Greencastle head coach Craig Callahan said. "At the beginning of the year, we said our team goal was to win county, win conference and place third at sectional and so far we can check all three of those things off the list. We're excited to see we're right on Brownsburg heels. I mean, to be 16 points behind them, that's progress. Last year we weren't even near them, we were like 20 or 30 points behind Plainfield.

"So, we're moving up the ladder, we're getting better, the guys are believing in it and believing in what we're doing. The true test is going to come Saturday," he added.

GHS senior Ryan Stevens was the county's top finisher, placing sixth place with a time of 17:01.97. Greencastle placed three runners in the top 15 en route to its third place finish.

Tyler Hudson was ninth overall with a time of 17:10.64 and freshman Elijah Brattain was 14th with a time of 17:28.89. Nathan Eubank was 17th with a time of 17:38.52 and Paul Bryant was 20th with a time of 17:51.69. Mitchell Hunter ran a time of 17:53.82, good enough for 21st and Taylor Secrest was 22nd with a time of 17:55.98.

"I'm super excited to see Ryan Stevens placing in the top 10, Tyler Hudson in the top 10. Elijah Brattain running great in the top 15 as a freshman. That's incredible," Callahan said.

The Clovers were led by Joe Rumley's 37th place finish, running a time of 18:31.72. His teammate Jourdan Smith was 40th in a time of 18:42.74 and Devon Nees was 53rd with a time of 19:46.26. Aaron Whitlock was 66th with a time of 20:34.66.

Chris Worthington was 68th overall with a time of 20:36.59, with Jacob Waycott placing 77th in a time of 21:27.76 and Nicholas Cupp was 78th in a time of 21:36.28.

South Putnam runner Evan Potts paced the Eagles with a 44th place finish in a time of 18:59.13, with Lane Franklin placed 47th in a time of 19:09.24. Matthew Lund finished 51st in a time of 19:27.20 and Lijah Harris was 65th in a time of 20:32.05.

Tyler Nield followed in 67th place with a time of 20:35.35, with Dakota Evans placing 72nd with a time of 20:52.39. Tyler Vandermark was 75th for the Eagles with a time of 21:22.24.

Dalton Spear was North Putnam's top finisher in 35th place with a time of 18:28.54. Trenton Osborn placed 56th with a time of 19:59.98, while Jacob Hendershot was 69th with a time of 20:40.82 and Joe Mindiola 70th with a time of 20:41.81. Chase Salyers finished 83rd on the night with a time of 22:33.30 and Michael Herrmann was 85th in a time of 23:02.34.

Looking forward to the Ben Davis Regional, Callahan said his team will get some needed rest and be ready to attack the course on Saturday.

"We're all in the 17-minute range," he said. "You factor that into Saturday on a faster course when these guys are fully rested, because we haven't fully rested them yet, our times are going to do nothing but plummet -- we're hoping. We're going to speed up, but the competition is going to be stiffer though. So, we're exciting to see where we're headed from here."

The top five teams and top five individuals will continue on to the Ben Davis Regional Saturday.
