Roachdale takes out the trash

Thursday, October 13, 2011

ROACHDALE -- The Roachdale Town Council addressed an issue during its monthly Tuesday night meeting brought up by several guests at the meeting: A local resident building a large pile of garbage on his property.

Town residents have addressed the board and local authorities over the past several days regarding the owner of the property of 7 S. Meridian St. The owner has several bags of garbage in his garage that have been piling up, creating a large stink and attracting animals.

Roachdale Police Chief Mike Mahoy went to the property to take pictures of the pile-up for legal records and to show the town council.

Mahoy also suspects the resident's chickens have left their droppings in the pile.

"It's a nuisance," Mahoy said. "More than likely they're going to fight the town."

The board, which was without Barbara Scott, agreed to issue a warning to the owner. He has seven days to remove the garbage or the city will begin to issue ordinances against him and force him to pay fines.

Though the board believes the property owner will fight these charges, board president William Long said something must be done.

"I don't know why he can't take care of it," Long said.

In other business, the board approved the 2012 budget after waiving the second reading. It also approved an easement made with Casey's General Store, located at 2 S. Indiana St.

The easement requires Casey's to fix its drainage problem, which forced water draining from the property's parking lot onto other city properties, and to continue to keep track of the drainage in the future. The problem has already been fixed and the town has received no other complaints, Long said.

The town also announced its trick-or-treat hours. The hours will be from 7-9 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 31.

The next board meeting will take place on the third Tuesday of the month, on Nov. 15, instead of the second. This is because the board did not want its meeting to take place on Nov. 8, which is election day.

  • Good luck with the trash problem. Don't expect the County or the State to act,- been there and tried that. Once had a neighbor that never had any trash service for 5 years. He kept throwing it in his garage. It attracted many rodents and all species of roaches.

It wasn't cleaned up until they moved.

  • You should know the whole story before reporting it. First of all these people had to get an attorney back in August and start a civil rights law suit against the town of Roachdale, and this trash nonsense is in direct retaliation of that. Also these people have been steadily restoring their 100+ yr old home for two years now making Roachdale a better place, as the house sat empty for more then 2 years prior to their buying it. I know for a fact that there is no trash in the garage, it is all building materials and regular things like the lawn mower. There is a pile of wood and lath from the renovation out behind the garage, so if that is smelling I'd like to meet the person with that good of a nose. Please try to get all the facts before turning in an article. Or at least go talk to the other party involved, that is reliable reporting. And remember election day is coming to all those who sit on the board in Roachdale!

  • Roachdale needs to take out the good old boys attitude that they have, and realize that it is alright and even good when new people move into the community and try to revitalize an old home. To try and bully one family with regulations that only they have to abide by, cut down their trees, and make them get rid of their pets while other families do not is just plain bullying. These are supposed to be adults on the town board but they are letting one or two people bully them into doing very unethical and immoral things to one very hard working family. Roachdale should be ashamed. I am glad I live in DANVILLE!!

  • Twenty years later, Roachdale is still Roachdale. I had hoped the Casey's was a sign of progress. Guess not.

  • Seriously the real story is that at first when they started their renovations they had a roll off from a local trash service. After that was filled and taken away they just started throwing trash all around and yes in the garage. Then they put up a very unstable fence that is yet to be completed. Then they built a chicken coop and when they found out that was against the town ordance they got very angry and said they were going to sue the town. THEN they started to put in an above ground pool, looked like it would be nice but it was never finished and is yet now just more trash in their yard. THEN the trash filled bags were thrown in behind the garage and around the yard. THEN the skunk problem started and the skunks were more than a few. THEN they finally decided to fix the roof which was started two years ago but now has been abandonded yet again. THEN they started to burn their trash and a very toxic burn was spread throughout the area. So please get the facts straight gbolboygn, and jp99 but it is truly a trash filled yard, garage and house. These are all things that I know for a fact. Why do they just let that place be such a nasty sight. Not to mention all the trash that is stored on their front porch. That house looked better when it was empty for two years, a lot lot better.
