Cloverdale men charged in two church burglaries

Kevin Bain

Three Cloverdale men are each facing eight felony counts following a pair of late-night church burglaries.

Kevin M. Bain, 26, Michael Wade Davis, 22, and Justin Phillip Delp, 23, were charged in Putnam Circuit Court on Thursday for the alleged crimes. Cloverdale Christian Church and Mt. Hebron Community Christian Church, both in rural Cloverdale, were burglarized in the late night/early morning hours of Oct. 25 and 26.

Each man faces two counts each of Class B felony burglary, Class B felony conspiracy to commit burglary, Class D felony theft and Class D felony conspiracy to commit theft.

Michael Davis

All three men are housed at the Putnam County Jail on $30,000, cash only bonds.

According to court records, Delp admitted to both burglaries in an Oct. 26 interview with Putnam County Sheriff's Department Detective Virgil Lanning.

Delp said the three men first broke into Cloverdale Christian Church at 11961 S. State Road 42. He said Bain smashed a side window, then went in and let the other two in the side door.

Justin Delp

He said they went inside, grabbing a computer, two computer monitors and some drinks from the refrigerator.

Investigation of the church showed the scene as Delp had described. The missing items were located in the car the three men were driving.

The alleged burglary of Mt. Hebron Church, 1339 W. CR 1000 South, took place at approximately 3 a.m. Bain made entry through a rear window, Delp advised, and then opened the door for the others.

Taken from the second church were electonics, including an electric bass guitar and amplifier; a wooden "Tithing Box" containing $80 in cash and numerous checks; an Allied socket set; and various food items.

Delp advised Wade and Bain took the food items because they had the "Xanex munchies."

Documents indicate that after leaving the church, the three men drove north to the Tobacco Road Marathon station at State Road 243 and Interstate 70. Delp said they pulled up to the dumpster on the building's east side and broke the box open.

He said they took the $80 and tore up the checks before driving back toward Cloverdale.

A clerk at the station noticed the suspicious activity and found the broken box in the dumpster after the car had departed. He called dispatch, and Deputy Dwight Simmons responded to the scene, beginning the investigation.

After leaving the Marathon station, Delp said he, Bain and Davis drove to Stardust Hills, where they bought methamphetamine with the $80 from Mt. Hebron. He said they then went to the Cloverdale BP at U.S. 231 and I-70 and did the meth in the bathroom.

While they were parked at the BP, Deputy Mike Downing located the vehicle they were driving, a 1996 Chevrolet Monte Carlo registered to Angela L. Moss. Delp said as they walked back to the car and saw Downing they knew they were in trouble.

In interviews with Simmons, both Delp and Bain implicated themselves and Davis in discarding the wooden box. Davis said he had no involvement and knew nothing about the crimes.

The deputies got the permission of Moss, who was working as the attendant at the BP, to search her car. She said she had let the three men borrow the car for the night.

Upon searching the vehicle, Simmons and Downing found the computer, computer monitors, a 60-cup coffee maker, various food items, the bass guitar and amplifier and four window treatments later identified as coming from Mt. Hebron Church.

Parties from the two churches were contacted, noting what items were missing from the buildings as well as identifying items from the vehicles as belonging to the churches.

The three men were taken to the Putnam County Jail between 8 and 9 a.m. Oct. 26 and booked on preliminary charges of receiving stolen property.

The official charges were filed by Putnam County Prosecutor Tim Bookwalter on Oct. 27.

  • If I remember right Michael used to go to the Christian Church on 42 (but not to steal). Wow it only seems like yesterday when he was getting arrested for the first time. Now he is all grown up, breaking into churches, and doing meth in gas station bathrooms.

  • Sad....Used to be the worst you found in Cloverdale was speeding. Now a breeding ground for crime and drugs. We need to develop some things to do for young people in that town and maybe create neighborhood watches to flush them out. (I also think everyone talks about their own private hospitals or police force but why each article posted...does a good job need to have an insult included? I certainly am not out there at night away from my family putting my life at risk to fight these crimes. Even a traffic/seat belt stop nowadays can be life threatening...Less complaining and more solutions?!?)

  • How many crimes does Davis have to commit before they throw away the key. I wish the justice system would do their job with this loser. He should of already be doing hard time with the rap sheet he has.

  • Hey doseofwhatmatters, My point is ,too many criminals on the street! If these guys were caught, even traffic stops would be safer, even if it was just for a seat belt violation! Thanks for supporting the solution!

  • A big "Attaboy" is due to the clerk who did the right thing and got involved!! Hopefully, the county Sheriffs department can arrest the meth dealers as well.

  • The youngsters in Cloverdale need something to do so they wont turn into thug criminals?Seems like thousands of kids emerged from the admittedly boring scene there without turning into idiots like these punks. How about some better parenting, maybe some self discipline and control, maybe many other thing, just cant blame it on Cloverdale even if the town is a mess.Ask yourself who was these morons role models? The crap on tv, in their music, and maybe weak parenting and the lazy, non working thugs turn into what they admire....

  • Youngsters? These are full grown men! So this the town's fault? These men broke into churches and bought drugs and such because Cloverdale isn't giving them something else to do with themselves in the middle of the week in the middle of the night?

    Now there is some LOGIC.

  • First of all I would hope the people of the church would pray for all the men involved and forgive them like GOD has forgiven us. I agree that what they did was terrible but everyone can change and deserves forgiviness. Second of all lets not bash their parents. I know the parents of one man and they are both wonderful people. Just because their kids did what they did it was not their faults at all. We all try our hardest to teach our kids wrong from right and hope they take this with them to adult life, but reality is, when they get out into this terrible world we live in they make their own choices. They deserve and will recieve punishment, but we are all sinners and in GOD'S eyes us judging them is the same as what they did. I will be praying for a change in their lives for all people involved in the situation.

  • I hope some one helps them with their drug addictions, which has ultimately lead to this type of behavior. When they get clean, the fog will clear and they will be able to see more clearly that the decisions they make not only hurt them, but the people who care for them and the people they intentionally hurt. I love all three of these guys as if they were my own flesh and blood. They practically helped raise me, thankfully they kept their "street life" away from me! I hope for the best for you three, and I hope the churches, and god himself, will forgive you three for the misguided things you have done!

  • Whoa Nellie, turn on the light before ya read. A earlier poster suggests they were bad because of a lack of things to do in Cdale. I merely disagreed.Read carefully. You really got waaay confused, lol.Reading is fundamental...

  • Lack of things to do doesn't breed drug addicts and criminals. Their upbringings and lack of parental guidance probably caused this more so than where they were raised. I didn't have a lot to do as a child either and I'm not a criminal.

Stop blaming the police. The problem is nationwide. This generation has been raised by televisions and computers and their friends. No wonder they have poor morals. With the increase in drug use and crime the police have more than they can handle and do the best they can with what they have.

  • AGAIN I SAY...YOU CANT BLAME THE PARENTS. THESE MEN ARE ADULTS! IF YOU BLAME ANYONE BLAME THE DEVIL. YOU CAN LEAD A HORSE TO WATER BUT YOU CAN NOT MAKE THEM DRINK IT. IT DOESNT MATTER HOW YOU WERE BROUGHT UP ONCE YOU ARE AN ADULT YOU MAKE YOUR OWN CHOICES. SO IF A PREACHERS CHILD GROWS UP AND BECOMES AN ADDICT WHOSE FAULT IS THAT? THIS WORLD IS A HORRIBLE CORRUPT PLACE...SIN IS EVERYWHERE. ITS THE DEVIL WORKING AND UNLESS WE BRING GOD BACK INTO OUR LIVES IT WILL BE LIKE THIS UNTIL GOD TAKES US HOME...IF PEOPLE WANT A CHANGE PRAY FOR A CHANGE BECAUSE THE POLICE NOR ANY OTHER HUMAN CAN DO IT BY THEMSELVES...ONLY GOD CAN JUST LIKE ONLY GOD CAN JUDGE! SHEESH PEOPLE.

  • Fanatic much? Upbringing Has EVERYTHING to do with it....I'm not saying its the parents fault completely....We aren't raised JUST by our parents...its society and all the people around us. God has nothing to do with it....

  • Neither does the devil. It's FREE WILL. These guys made their choices .. over and over again, it seems.
