Coming to terms with death, told

After growing up afraid of death her whole life, author Marjorie E. Hopkins has finally come to the conclusion no one should fear death, especially not a Christian.

Through years of being married to a local funeral home director, Hopkins is publishing her first book, "Dying to Meet Him -- Wit and Wisdom from a Funeral Director's Wife" that is based on true events that took place during her marriage.

Hopkins, currently a freelance writer, is also a DePauw University graduate with a degree in English composition.

She has been published in several magazines, marketing materials, newspapers and now has finished her own book.

"I've always had a passion for writing," said Hopkins. "I wanted this to be something important that could help people."

Every chapter of the book is in the format of a short story each beginning with a humorous introduction, which then leads into a deep reflection. Although, each chapter is a separate story all share the common thread of thinking eternally versus the here and now of the world.

"Growing up I used to be afraid of death," said Hopkins. "So, it was really humorous that I ended up marrying a funeral director."

Basing the book off a Bible passage, Ecclesiastes 7:2, 'Death is the destiny of every man; the living should take this to heart', Hopkins believes that no Christian should fear death. A Christian herself, Hopkins believes that the book is ideal for Bible studies, church home group studies or individual studies.

"I don't remember a time when I wasn't close to God," she said. "Now, I can't wait to meet him."

Hopkins set out with a goal for her novel, which was to try and explain death in a way that people would understand. After coming to terms with it herself through getting a much closer look through out her life, she feels like she can help others with her stories.

"I no longer fear death," explained Hopkins. "It's the one thing people ignore and don't speak of. Yet, it's the only thing that's certain in life."

The book is now available for purchase in both paperback and e-book forms for $11.99 through Hopkins' website, www.dying tomeethim.com. The book will also be in local bookstores beginning in December.

Hopkins will also be doing several book signings in support of her new book. She will also be doing a signing at Goodies Galore on the west side of Brazil on Thursday and Saturday from 11 a.m. -- 1 p.m. Finally, on Saturday at Baesler's Market in Terre Haute from 9 a.m. -- 1 p.m.
