Cougars fall off pace late
ROACHDALE -- In a shootout that saw North Putnam and Southmont in a dead heat after three quarters, the visiting Mounties had a few more bullets left for the final round.
Powered by three straight three-pointers from Devon Burton and Cody Thomas, Southmont (1-0) outscored the Cougars (0-1) by 13 in the fourth for an 86-73 win.
The squads traded buckets all night, with the Cougars grabbing a 5-point advantage after the first quarter, while the Mounties narrowly outscored them in the second and third quarters.
The Mounties' hot start in the fourth turned into a double-digit win.
Tim Wiltermood led the Cougar effort with 26 points. Jamison Brewer added 17 and Kolten Everts chipped in 14.
Brewer posted a double-double by adding 13 boards, leading the Cougars to a 38-27 advantage in that category. The team's 18 offensive rebounds led to 23 second-chance points.
Ball security was an issue, though, as the Cougars turned it over 17 times.
North Putnam was victimized by hot-shooting brothers Devon and Austin Brewer, who combined for 51 points.
The Cougars' 73-point opener should be encouraging for coach Nathan Martindale, as his squad topped the mark just once last season, an 81-72 victory over Cascade on Dec. 17.
The Cougars now turn their attention to within the county, as they face host Greencastle in the first round of the Putnam County Classic. The game tips at 8:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2.
