Thursday, December 1, 2011
One of 20 satisfied clients in 2011, Phyllis Gaffney takes a first stroll down her newly-constructed ramp built by the SAWs mission of the Greencastle Presbyterian Church.

The SAWs mission of the Greencastle Presbyterian Church, that builds ramps for the handicapped in Putnam County, finished its 2011 build season on Friday, Nov. 18.

It was quite a year, with 20 people in Putnam County provided with needed improved access to their homes.

SAWs (Servants at Work) is a mission that for the past three years has provided freedom to Putnam County residents who are trapped in their homes by their ailments. These ramps have been and will be provided free of charge to qualified recipients.

During the 2011 build season that started in April, the SAWs volunteers have donated more than 1,050 hours of work to helping those in need.

Thanks to donations and grants from the Putnam County Community Foundation, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the Will Center, Area 7 Agency on Aging and Disabled and the residents of Putnam County, 15 ramps were built and an additional five residents had their home access improved through the addition of low rise steps and safety railings.

The mission is already planning for next year with a few ramp inquiries to be reviewed and scheduled. As in the past year, SAWs is looking to help handicapped, low-income citizens of Putnam County in 2012.

If you are handicapped or know someone who is handicapped and has difficulty accessing their home, call the Greencastle Presbyterian Chruch office at 653-5713.

Residents needing help will be contacted and a survey of their needs will be completed.

The 2012 build season will begin around the first of April, depending on the weather.

The SAWs mission does into consideration those who are truly trapped in their homes and will try to accommodate them on an emergency basis prior to next April.

All of the mission volunteers look forward to helping even more of those in need next year.
