Rebecca Jo "Becky" Brothers, age 55, of Roachdale, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011 at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.

Born July 26, 1956 in Greencastle, she was the daughter of Joseph William and Marie (Mink) Brothers.

She was a graduate of North Putnam High School, Class of 1974; Marian College, where she had been an athlete and active in three sports; and received her Master's Degree from DePauw University.

Becky has given 30 years of service to the South Putnam High School, first as a teacher and coach, and the last 18 years as a guidance counselor.

She was active in the Roachdale Christian Church, Friend of the St. John's United Church of Christ, P.I.E. Coalition, Putnam County Youth Development Commission, Area 30, Putnam County Senior Citizens, Putnam County Teen Court, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and South Putnam Student Council.

She was an avid sports fan with a love for softball and volleyball.

Recipient of the Distinguished Hoosier Award, awarded by Gov. Mitch Daniels on Nov. 19, 2011, her past awards have included the Bessie Rector Award, Mental Health America Person of the Year, North Putnam Alumni of the Year and the 2010 Greater Greencastle Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year.

Survivors include her brothers, Bill (Jana) Brothers of Roachdale, Jim (Tammy) Brothers of Greencastle, and Ron (Marty) Brothers of Indianapolis; nieces and nephews, Landon and Cameron Brothers, Brittney and Drew Brothers, and Chelsea and Bailey Brothers.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, John Brothers.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4 at South Putnam High School with Pastors Don Crisman and Mick Buchanan officiating. Interment will follow at the Brick Chapel Cemetery.

Friends may call at South Putnam High School from 1-6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory to the Putnam County Community Foundation, 2 N. Jackson St., Greencastle, IN 46135, where a fund is being established in Becky's name.
