The GHS boys' junior varsity basketball team split a pair of close games last week.

On Thursday at McAnally Center, the young Tiger Cubs fought back from a 16-4 half-time deficit and lost to the Sparkplugs by six, 35-29.

Down 18-4 after the first possession of the second half, Greencastle ratcheted-up the defensive pressure and went on a 20-7 run and were down 25-24 with a chance to take the lead at the free-throw stripe. GHS was unable to convert but still was down only three with 10 seconds to go in the contest. A rebound and put-back by Speedway sealed the win.

Brody Bollman led Greencastle in scoring with nine and both Tanner Nicholson and Adam Gerard tallied seven.

On Saturday, the team traveled to West Vigo to face a tough Viking squad. Down 11-4 early, Coach Doug Hudson called a timeout and admonished the squad for lack of defensive intensity. The team responded and was down by five at half 20-15.

The lead for West Vigo was never more than five the remainder of the game and the Tiger Cubs outscored the Vikings by two in the third quarter and three in the fourth to force overtime. Playing solid defense and displaying patience on offense, Greencastle outscored West Vigo 6-5 in the extra period to pull out the victory.

Tanner Nicholson led all scorers with 15 points and Holden King added nine. Brody Bollman and Adam Gerard were strong defensively for the Tiger Cubs.

Greencastle is now 3-5 on the season and hosts South Putnam Thursday in a boys'/girls' junior varsity double-header with the girls game beginning at 6 p.m.
