Taylor scores 19 in Tiger Cubs loss to Cadets

Saturday, January 21, 2012
Freshman Callan Taylor scored a game-high 19 points in the Tiger Cubs' 65-57 loss to Cascade Friday.

A big first quarter by visiting Cascade proved to be too much for Greencastle to overcome Friday, as they fell to Cadets 65-57. The Tiger Cubs actually outscored the Cadets 39-31 in the second half, but the damage had already been done.

Freshman Callan Taylor led all scorers with 19 points and head coach Bradley Key said he told his team he was looking for someone to step in Friday's contest.

"Cascade's 13-3 for a reason," he said. "We knew they were a good team. I really felt good coming into the game and so did the girls. We talked a lot about big players step up in big games and I pointed back to Hannah's junior year when she had a big game against Cascade and hit four threes. Taylor Pruitt sophomore year, she had 17 points against Monrovia to win it and I said someone's got to come help those to out tonight and Callan Taylor hit five threes.

"We got off to a slow start and they got some easy baskets off the fast break and that's what they do. We talked about it, but I have to make sure we're a little more prepared for it. I thought overall, we played hard. I know I say that a lot, but this group does play hard," Key added.

The Tiger Cubs fell behind 19-6 after the first quarter and 34-18 at the half, but refused to give up or give in.

Wainman opened the second half with a three pointer and spurred on a noticeably more aggressive offensive squad that cut the lead to 40-28 entering the final quarter of play.

In the final quarter, Greencastle outscored the Cadets 19-16, but the early deficit was too big a mountain to climb, with the Tiger Cubs falling by the eight-point margin.

Frustrations came to a head with :56 remaining in the game when Key had an extended discussion with an official, which prompted the official to signal Key for a technical foul.

In addition to Taylor's 19 point performance, Pruitt added 15, with Wainman chipping in 11. Rayleigh Amis had five points, with Jessi Cover and Melody White adding two points each.

In the loss, Wainman set a new single-season steal record by swiping her 77th steal of the season against the Cadets.

"It's unbelievable," Key said. "It's a testament to her work and heart. Getting touches on passes -- I don't know how she comes up with the ones she does, because she's not a fast person by any means, but just has that desire to win and that's awesome to see."

He also said it's good to see how hard his team fought against a possible sectional opponent.

Greencastle will take on Turkey Run today at 1 p.m.
