North Putnam routs Falcons on senior night

Wednesday, January 25, 2012

ROACHDALE -- Senior night proved to be a resounding success for the North Putnam swim teams Tuesday night.

The boys' squad picked up a 134-38 win over visiting North Vermillion, while the girls' earned their second win of the year 95-40 over the Falcons.

Lydia Volland, Hunter Logan, Jared James and Tyler Shorter were on show on a night where events were tweaked on occasion and new records were set.

The boys' 200 free relay squad of Shorter, James, Logan and Dane Gray set a new record in the event, almost two full seconds ahead of the previous record set in 2010 en route to a win in the event.

James also added wins in the 100 and 200 free while Shorter won the diving competition and Gray nabbed the 50 free. Trevor Troyer won the 200 IM and 100 butterfly.

Taylor Thornell won the 500 free while Joe Lehr won the 100 backstroke. The team of Lehr, Troyer, Sean Hinners and Nick Kaufman won the 200 medley relay while the squad of Hinners, Thornell, Taylor and Cyle Ford won the 400 free relay.

For the girls, Elizabeth Alford won the 200 IM and the 500 free, Caroline Byrd won the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke, Alexandra Moore took the 50 free and Rebecca Muse won the 100 free.

The team of Alford, Muse, Byrd and Moore won the 200 medley relay, the squad of Byrd, Moore, Muse and Sierra Livesay won the 200 free relay and the team of Alford, Livesay, Volland and Autumn Wolf claimed the 400 free relay.

North Putnam head coach Tony Gray said afterwards that the night was a fitting one for both squads.

"I was really excited about it. That's two wins in a row for the girls. We've only got seven or eight girls, so it's been a hard road for them this year but, to get two wins in a row, I'm really proud of them," Gray said.

"It's senior night. We didn't want to make a mockery of the meet but we wanted the kids to have fun, so we let the kids do some crazy things.

"We had a girl and a boy each swim the 500 free as a 500 breaststroke. We had a 200 freestyle swim as a 200 back. The 400 free relay was swam as a 400 medley relay. We keep track of special events, and set records in these events.

"We did set a real record in the 200 free relay. Considering they didn't have anyone to really race, we're real proud of that," Gray added.

"We've got four really great seniors in Lydia Volland, Tyler Shorter, Hunter Logan and Jared James. They've shown great leadership all year and really helped build this program to where we want to take it."

Next for the boys' squad is a trip to Fountain Central for a three-way meet along with Tri-West. Gray said that the meet could go either way between the Cougars and Bruins.

"It's going to be a tough meet. We scored the meet out with Tri-West and it's going to come down to a four or five point meet either way. They've got some really good swimmers," Gray said.

"With it being a three-way meet, we're not going to get to use our depth, which is our strong point for our team.

"Fountain Central is a little bit down this year. They're going to probably win one event but it's going to come down to Tri-West and ourselves," Gray added.

For the girls, the Putnam County Meet Thursday will be the final meet before the sectional. Gray said that the swimmers would get a chance to show their stuff in their strongest events.

"I think it's going to be a good meet. Greencastle Greencastle is going to be tough to catch. South Putnam's pretty strong. Really, we don't have an opportunity to win a county title for the girls," Gray said.

"We're entering them based upon their abilities in individual events so they can succeed, we'll see where we go from there."
