'Dear Dr. King' by Luke Varvel, GMS, third place

Dear Dr. King,

Many things have changed since your unfortunate death. People from all over the world have equal rights and everyone is treated like human beings. You could ride anywhere on a bus, drink out of any water fountain and you can go to any school without it being a "white school" or a "black school."

You have influenced thousands, even millions of people. People aren't afraid to fight for what's right. You are the reason that people today aren't scared to say what needs to be said. However, not everyone agrees with equal rights. Some still believe that they are better than someone because of race or religion.

Hatred will always be a part of life. It is a horrible thing to admit but it's true. But there are many people out there just like you. They know what's right and what's wrong. It is those people who keep them from discriminating against certain people.

There will always be people who support equality, and there will always be people who don't. But you have made such a large influence that those people who don't, have been brought over to your side of thinking. You are a large influence on the county and me.

Sincerely,

Luke Varvel
