Man on a ledge

Wednesday, February 8, 2012

Using a pressure washer and employing a lift and a crane to reach all the all nooks and crannies in the high places, a crew from Karr Tuckpointing Co., Vinton, Iowa, continues cleaning and maintenance work on the exterior of the Putnam County Courthouse Tuesday afternoon. In addition to washing away dirt and grime and occasional pigeon droppings, the Karr crew will be repairing cosmetic imperfections to the courthouse as well.

  • Having been on the court house ledge a few times, I couldn't help but notice the many imperfections in the limestone. It has been pointed out how inexpensively the court house was built. The saying that you get what you pay for can be found in the upper areas of our beautiful court house. I know a bit about limestone and the limestone is of an inferior quality where the public usually never sees. The inferior limestone is what keeps falling from above. Power washing will only speed up the deterioration of the limestone. I hope the cosmetic work is more than just cosmetic.

The State Historic Preservation Society is set up to give advise on situation such as proper cleaning and preserving of old limestone building in Indiana.
