Richard J. 'Dick' Sutherlin

Richard J. "Dick" Sutherlin, 53, Pittsboro, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012 at Hendricks Regional Health in Danville.

He was born on Sept. 12, 1958, in LaPorte County, the son of the late Richard John and Phillis Mae Bartos.

He spent his early childhood in LaPorte. As a young boy, he was adopted by Gene and Marjorie Sutherlin and at that time moved to Greencastle. Dick was a 1977 graduate of Greencastle High School.

In 2005, he moved to Pittsboro. On July 20, 2006, he was married to Linda Marie (Fisher) Wood Sutherlin, in Danville. Mrs. Sutherlin survives.

Dick worked as a truck driver for Hanes Trucking of Lebanon and prior to that a diesel mechanic. He was also a former volunteer firefighter in Greencastle.

A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he had a special connection with his grandchildren, who called him Pappy. Dick also enjoyed the outdoors and took great pleasure in horseback riding.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by five children, Brandi Wood of Pittsboro, Traci Porch and husband Chris of Pittsboro, Brandon Sutherlin and wife Julia of Greencastle, Johnathan Sutherlin of Indianapolis and Heath Sutherlin and wife Emily of Greencastle; sister Jenny Parmley and husband Wayne of LaPorte; brother Robert Sutherlin and wife Vicki of Fillmore; and 10 Grandchildren

Visitation is planned for Thursday, March 1 from 4-6:30 p.m. at Myers Chapel of Memories, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. Funeral services are to be held at the funeral home at 6:30 p.m., following the visitation.
