IHSAA boys basketball sectional action continues

Thursday, March 1, 2012

The 2011-12 IHSAA boys' basketball sectional got underway Tuesday and will continue throughout the week until the sectional championship games slated for Saturday around the state.

Greencastle and South Putnam picked up wins on Tuesday to advance to Friday's sectional semifinal.

South Putnam defeated Cloverdale 54-39 at the South Putnam Class 2A No. 44 Sectional. South Putnam will face Cascade, the only team with a winning record in the sectional, Friday at 6 p.m.

The Eagles have come up short against Cascade twice this season. They lost to Cascade 68-44 on Dec. 9 and again in the championship game of the South Putnam Classic 68-55 on Dec. 30.

Greencastle won a thrilling contest against Brown County 66-65 on a last second shot by Jesse Tesmer. Now the Tiger Cubs will face Owen Valley, the team that accounted for the Tiger Cubs' final loss of the season on Feb. 21.

In their previous meeting this season, Owen Valley defeated GHS 54-40. The Patriots received a first round bye to land in the sectional semifinal.

North Putnam received a first-round bye and will face Frankfort after the Hot Dogs defeated Southmont 74-72 Tuesday. The Hot Dogs are an unfamiliar foe for the Cougars with no reported meetings between the two squads in the past 15 years.

Sectional continues around the state Friday. For more information about the state tournament or brackets, visit the official IHSAA website.
