The Edgewood Mustangs held off a tough West Vigo squad Friday at the IHSAA Class 3A No. 28 sectional semifinal, winning 59-46. The Mustangs will face Owen Valley in the final after the Patriots defeated the host Tiger Cubs 57-46.
Edgewood enjoyed an early lead that grew from 19-10 after one quarter to 34-20 at halftime. The Mustangs were cruising, but that's when the Vikings decided they weren't ending their season without a fight.
West Vigo outscored Edgewood 14-5 in the third quarter to close the gap to 39-34 after three quarters played. In the fourth quarter, the Vikings pulled within three points when Jordan Houser hit back to back baskets making the score 41-38.
The Vikings continued to attack in an attempt to claw their way into the lead, but Edgewood hit enough buckets down the stretch to secure the win and a trip to the sectional final.
James Ridge led Edgewood with 20 points, followed by Derek Driver with 13 and Trevor Selburg with eight. Houser scored 17 to lead the Vikings, with Cody Thornton adding 11 and Kyle Stewart seven.
Edgewood will face Owen Valley in the sectional semifinal tonight at 7:30 p.m.
