Truck crashes to avoid hitting car ahead on 231

Saturday, March 17, 2012
Truck driver Terry Campell crashed into a guardrail after a silver car in front of him slammed on its brakes, as to distract the truck driver. Campell was taken to Putnam County Hospital to be treated for minor cuts and bruises.

An act of negligence caused a major accident on U.S. 231 North, which left a truck driver in the Putnam County Hospital on Friday afternoon.

Truck driver Terry Campell of Poling Trucking Co. of Nashville, Ind., was driving north on 231 when a small silver car pulled out in front of him.

"The vehicle in front of him slammed on his brakes," said Putnam County Sheriff's Captain Danny Wallace. "Instead of hitting him, he swerved left and hit a guardrail and ran into some trees."

Campbell, of Fortville, Ind., was driving a truck loaded with rocks at the time. As the truck went over the guardrail it flipped onto its side. He was taken to Putnam County Hospital via Operation Life.

"He had some cuts and bruises," said Wallace. "He was taken as a precaution."

Authorities have yet to track down the car, which reportedly caused the accident.

Lt. Col. Tom Helmer, Segt. Gregg Slover and Deputy Josh Boller were on scene to help with the accident.

Read the article - the driver of the silver car pulled out in front of him and slammed on the brakes. The truck driver saved the life of the idiot driver of that car.

  • There are alot of stupid people that pull out in front of everyone, because they are in such a hurry to get nowhere fast. People need to slow down, and think before they pull out in front of Truck drivers, and motorcycles you can Save Lives. Thank goodness this guy is still alive, for the motorcycle guy that was hit this past week (around the same area ) was not as fortunate. My man friend is a truck driver, and he complains all the time how people pull out in front of him , people don't realize that they are hauling alot of weight in the trucks and it's hard to get the truck SLOWED DOWN.....

  • You are so right diamond. I do agree that the trucks, and I guess everyone drives too fast, however these trucks cannot stop on a dime like cars. I do hope they find this little car. People need to be more observant when they are behind the wheel of any moving vehicle on the highway and DON'T TEXT AND TALK ON THE PHONE. LET'S MAKE THIS A LAW PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @deerehead. how do you know there is more to the story? Only two people know the "whole story" The driver of the truck, and the driver of the car. I'm pretty sure you aren't Mr. Campell, were you driving the car that caused this.

  • The driver may have just fallen asleep or been under the influence of something and made the silver car story up to cover it up. Tricky, tricky!

  • It cracks me up that many of you can't imagine someone pulling out in front of a truck (or any other vehicle) in Putnam county. I see it every day on I-70 - drivers in the passing lane, passing those last 2 semis coming up on Exit 41 .. ZOOM, overshoot the exit, then slam on their brakes because they had to do 90mph to get around them. They don't care .. they got in front of the semis. Well, good job! (golf clap)

One day .. their luck will run out. I only hope they don't hurt anyone else when it does.
