Spring Walking Wednesdays effort off to a hopping start
Despite a rainy start to the day, last Wednesday, the spring series of Walking Wednesdays got off to a hopping good start. A number of the Putnam County Health Coalition members were on hand to greet and register walkers for the spring series of Walking Wednesdays at the People Pathways Gazebo at the start of the Greencastle Fillmore Trail.
In addition to the benefit of exercise, those who showed up for week one of the spring series of Walking Wednesdays were greeted by a sprinkling of crocheted Easter eggs along the path, provided by the mysterious Putnam County "Yarn Bombers." Walkers also received Easter eggs with coupons to the new frozen yogurt shop at the end of their walk courtesy of Green Frogurt and Joy Marley.
The purpose of Walking Wednesdays is to encourage residents of Putnam County to be more physically active and to become more familiar with some of the many trails and pathways available to the community. Each week the Coalition encourages people of all ages (and dogs on leashes) to join with others to walk or run on that week's selected trail.
To encourage participation, walkers and runners can register each week that they come for a drawing at the end of the eight-week program. There is no charge to participate. Walkers can go any distance they choose but paths of approximately one mile, two miles and a 5K are usually designated. While participants are encouraged to track their own progress the walks are noncompetitive and are not timed. Reminder: April 11 is the deadline to register for Extension Homemakers May 8, County Tour to the Propaylaeum and Naptown. The fee of $39 for the tour covers lunch and a three-hour, three-stop bus tour to some highlights and historic sites in Indianapolis. To register or for more information, call Marianne Novak at 386-2077.
