City offers residents cost-share program for tree-planting effort

Saturday, April 14, 2012

The City of Greencastle is offering residents the opportunity to participate in a street tree-planting program.

The goal is to cost-share with residents on the planting or replacement of street trees, City Planner Shannon Norman noted.

The program guidelines are as follows:

-- Trees must be planted within the public right-of-way only, not on private property.

-- The Greencastle Department of Public Works will confirm that the location is suitable for a street tree (factors include spacing, utilities and size of tree at maturity).

-- The city will work with the homeowner to select a tree species that is appropriate.

-- Trees purchased in the program are at least 1-1/2 inch caliper.

The resident will pay 50 percent of the initial cost for the tree planting (cost of tree, cost of ground preparation and cost of labor/watering) as negotiated with the city.

Interested persons may contact City Planner Norman 653-7719 or snorman@cityofgreen-castle.com for more information.
