Ball State student Brooke Lewis became the 2012 recipient of the Putnam County Retired Teachers Association recently.

Lewis graduated from Greencastle High School in 2009.

The $500 scholarship is awarded annually to a Putnam County high school graduate who is enrolled in an Indiana college education program.

"I have always wanted to do education," Lewis said. "Ever since I was little I haven't really thought about doing anything but teaching."

Lewis will be entering her senior year in the fall and said when picking a college after high school, BSU was an easy choice.

"It's really the only one I wanted to go to," she said. "They have one of the best teaching programs."

Lewis has a double major in elementary education and special education.

Scholarship recipients are selected by a committee from the PCRTA based on academics, extracurricular activities and financial need.

They are paid for primarily by contributions from members.

"I really enjoy being on these committees because it really helps the students," co-president Mariette Bargen said.

The PCRTA is an affiliate of the Indiana Retired Teachers Association.

"We call ourselves the true voice of Indiana's retired teachers," Bargen said.

Lewis said she applied for the scholarship after her father, Wayne, sent her information about it.
