Greencastle Grad wins IBA Scholarship

Thursday, June 7, 2012

The Indiana Broadcasters Association (IBA) has announced $30,000 in scholarships to current high school students who will be attending Indiana colleges and universities and majoring in telecommunications, electronic media or broadcast journalism along with current college and university students enrolled at Indiana schools and majoring in these fields.

Recent Greencastle High School graduate Olivia Humphreys won a $500 scholarship as she is about to move on to pursue a career in Sports Broadcasting.

An avid journalist, thespian, and track and cross country runner, Olivia discovered she could combine all three passions by creating the GHS Future Broadcaster's Initiative (FBI) this past year. The broadcasting group is dedicated to informing the community and school about the events and sports occurring in the high school.

Humphreys found great success through FBI and was offered an internship at DePauw University's D3TV, where she served as a sports reporter and anchor for the television show, The Source.

As a result of her efforts at DEPU and with FBI, Humphreys was also selected as one of six high school sports writers and photojournalists to attend the Super Bowl Media Day at the end of January. Her experience at Media Day helped solidify her passion for broadcasting, which she hopes to explore further in college.

Humphreys will be attending Indiana University's Ernie Pyle School of Journalism as an Ernie Pyle Scholar in the fall, earning a bachelor's degree in Journalism with a focus in sports broadcasting.

This year 16 students were selected from 147 applications. Six current seniors in high school were awarded $500 each and 10 current College/University students will each receive $2,700. The IBA Board of Directors agreed to match donations from Indiana Radio/TV stations this year doubling the amount awarded from previous years.

The scholarship eligibility requirements are a minimum of a 3.0 GPA, resident of the State of Indiana, the student must have actively participated in a broadcast facility and/or worked for or interned at a commercial broadcast facility and received credit in a telecommunications, electronic media or broadcast journalism program. There were several;Indiana Radio and TV stations which contributed to the scholarship fund.
