Civic League sponsors second annual junior tennis tournament

Monday, June 18, 2012

The Greencastle Civic League will host the second annual junior tennis tournament for kids in Putnam County.

The tournament will be held on July 7-8 starting at 9 a.m. at the DePauw University outdoor courts and is open to kids ages 5-18. All participants will receive a T-shirt and a medal, and there will be trophies for age division winners and runners-up.

All ability levels are welcome, and beginners are especially encouraged to sign up as tournament workers will help the younger participants start the point and keep score.

The tournament is a fundraiser for the Splash Park project for the Civic League. All proceeds from the tournament will go directly toward this project.

The early bird entry fee for singles is $12 and $15 per doubles team. Early bird registration ends on June 22.

After June 22, the entry fee is $17 for singles and $20 per doubles team. The deadline for registration is June 29.

All players are also required to bring a new can of tennis balls (any brand) as part of the registration fee.

All players under the age of 10 will play according to the QuickStart format, which means they will use a smaller court and low-compression balls that are easier to hit as they are lighter and do not bounce as high.

Kids ages 6 and under will play a round-robin format of games consisting of 10 points. Coaches will toss the ball to start each point.

Kids in the 10 and under division will play a set with players having the option to serve or having a coach toss the ball to start the point.

All other age divisions will play the best two out of three, six-game sets on a full-size court with regular tennis balls.

The Civic League is pleased to announce an exciting new addition to the tournament this year. Ace, the dog mascot for the USTA Midwest Region, will be present at the tournament. Younger players will be able to play some tennis with him, take pictures and get his autograph.

Entry forms are available at City Hall, the Putnam County Library, the Putnam County Museum and the Aquatic Center at Robe-Ann Park.

Entry forms can also be found on the Civic League website: www.greencastlecivicleague.org.

The tournament is sponsored by Advantage Financial, AllState-Matt Welker's office, Case Chiropractic, Greencastle Pediatric Dentistry, Greencastle Hometown Dental, James W. Ensley, Marvin's and Stello Products.

If there are any questions about the tournament, please feel free to call Jamey Landry at 655-2466.
