Greencastle man, 28, dies in police shooting

A Greencastle man was shot and killed by a Greencastle City Police Department officer early Sunday morning near the corner of Maple Avenue and Sycamore Street.

Charles Aaron Brousard, 28, Greencastle, died after a physical altercation with an unnamed police officer shortly after midnight.

The officer had reportedly responded to a 911 call for a domestic dispute between a man and a woman at 511 Sycamore St.

Upon the officer's approach to the suspect, Brousard purportedly charged at the officer, resulting in a physical confrontation, authorities said.

The altercation that followed at the public basketball court near that Sycamore Street address resulted in an unknown number of gunshots being fired by the officer. He was the only police officer believed to be on scene at the time of the incident.

That officer, whose name has not been released pending further investigation, will spend the next two days on administrative leave. An investigation by local and state authorities is pending, as is typical in these situations.

Sgt. Curt Durnil, public information officer for Indiana State Police, said at the scene Sunday morning that information is limited.

"State Police are investigating," he said. "We do know that Mr. Brousard is dead, and we need to know how that happened."

When Putnam County EMS officials arrived just after the incident, they reportedly found Greencastle officers attempting to perform life-saving procedures on Brousard.

However, Brousard was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later by the Putnam County coroner.
